Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations in Yerevan

The U.S. Embassy in Yerevan alerts U.S. citizens in Armenia that a demonstration is planned for Friday, October 2, 2015. The demonstration will begin at 6:00 PM in Freedom Square, near the Yerevan Opera House.  Media reports indicate that the participants will march along the following route in Yerevan:

From Freedom Square along Mashtots Avenue to Amiryan Street to Republic Square and then returning to Freedom Square along Nalbandyan Street and Tumanyan Street.

Embassy staff have been advised to avoid these areas if this event occurs due to possible traffic and congestion.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy’s website, and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found. The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review “A Safe Trip Abroad,” which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Armenia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the U.S. Embassy.
