Emergency Contact Information for U.S. Citizens

Emergency situations include the death of an American citizen, the arrest of an American citizen and the loss/theft of an American passport, when travel must take place before the next working day.  Generally, an emergency is defined as a life or death situation that requires immediate assistance.

In the event that you need to reach a U.S.-citizen family member overseas in an emergency, please call:

  • State Department’s Citizen Emergency Center: (202) 647-5225 or toll-free from within the U.S. at 1-888-407-4747. The State Department will relay the message to consular officers in the country in which the U.S. citizen is traveling. Consular officers will try to locate him or her, pass on urgent messages, and, consistent with the Privacy Act, report back to you.
